I Resolve...

Well, to be honest I probably resolve too much. I'm a big resolution nerd. It seems though in recent years, or maybe I'm just noticing it more in recent years, that there is a trend towards not resolving. People literally are resolving to not resolve. What gives?

Being that I am, as previously mentioned, a big resolution nerd, I can assure you all that you will not have to endure this year without reading my horribly boring, much too drawn out annual post on resolutions. No, I cannot resolve not the resolve, for I love to resolve much too much for that. And so onward we forge...

This year The Knight and I conducted our annual state of the family planning meeting over a nice cocktail and an episode of Desperate Housewives (Dude! When will we find out what happened to Tom and the kids?! UGH!), obviously this task is given the utmost care and seriousness here in the royal chateau. It only took one suggestion from me, many puzzled looks from him and one long pause followed by two adults erupting into uncontrollable laughter to set our plans in stone, moss covered stone, but stone nonetheless. Our family resolution this year? to Compact.

Now, let me just explain a few things here. We really don't make very many new purchases that aren't necessary to begin with. We have two young children, we're a fledgling of a family, the budget requires us to be conscious of our expenditures already. With that said, there's always room for improvement. Also, that which must be explained is that we know, going into this, that we will fail. Unless I get really creative, really quickly it's highly unlikely, ok, fine impossible for us to completely fulfill The Compact - I suppose that's where my remaining doubt and uncertainty in this endeavor resides. The children will grow, they will need new shoes (which I refuse, flat out, to purchase used) and underwear (come on! ewwww! No way! Gotta be new!) etc. So, I guess you could say that we're resolving to all-but completely Compact. We will purchase new only what we cannot in any possible way figure out how to obtain used. And, sadly there is one other exception we've agreed to make, we have agreed that we can and probably will over the next year purchase new where the object will 1) increase in value either individually or by adding value to an already owned asset (we're planning to add phase two to our deck this year!) or 2) Is a requirement for our mode of making income (The Knight has necessary purchases for work, and sometimes me too - we'll try to go used where possible though!).

And there you have it, our family resolution for 2008. It's a little daunting. We head in both uncertain and excited. Hopefully I'll have time to blog about the outcome as the year wears on.

Anybody else taking on a large (or small) task as a family in the coming year?

We have a similar resolution for this year-we are going to cut back to eating out only once a week and save the money for a vacation. I'm starting a New Year's Resolution Blogroll if you want to join it, just stop by Table for Five and leave a comment on the post and I'll add you!
